Who are we

Fifth Dimension Consulting Engineers is a small locally owned structural engineering firm based in Christchurch. But we are more than just a structural engineering consultancy; we are a collaborative place for you. A place where concepts transform from fragments to tangible form.

At Fifth Dimension, your needs are at the centre of our design and we believe in communicating and collaborating in a way that creates and adds value to your project. Promoting early consultant involvement via in person meetings to listen, learn and develop an honest yet transparent culture is at the heart of what we do.

We believe in challenging the status quo in everything we do to create elegant, simple designs. Together with our client focused approach, we create a more enjoyable working environment to ensure successful project outcomes beyond your expectations.

Meet our TEAM

Steve Healey - Director

Mike Walker - Structural Engineer

Paerangi Matunga - Structural Engineer

Liam Strange - Structural Engineer

Our firm is led by Director and Senior Structural Engineer Steve Healey who has over fifteen years’ experience in the drafting and engineering industry. Steve is a Chartered Member of Engineering New Zealand and originally hailed from the North Island and has worked on numerous projects across New Zealand. With a background in draughting alongside his honors degree from the University of Canterbury, this provides the basis for producing effective engineering solutions.

Coupled with innovative and pragmatic designs, Steve ensures solutions are optimised for the client to meet their brief. Making sure the project is buildable with practical details with maximum economy during construction and minimising life cycle costs is of utmost importance to Steve.

It is in his DNA to pride himself on providing the highest quality service to clients through prompt, efficient and timely communication, listening to their needs and exceeding expectations whilst being reliable, professional, acting with integrity and maintaining an approachable attitude. These are all reasons as to why clients see value in Steve and continue to return.

Outside of work, Steve is an avid soccer fan/player, mountain biker, martial arts and outdoor enthusiast, and ex-race car driver; basically, he is sports mad. There is of course plenty of time set aside for family and friends as a healthy and active lifestyle with work-life integration is key!

Meet Mike Walker who has a diverse background in the New Zealand Engineering environment from graduating with a Mechanical Engineering Degree from the University of Canterbury to starting out as a Product Development Engineering prior to evolving into a skilled structural engineer. Mike is a Chartered Professional Engineer (Mechanical) and is working towards adding the structural component to this.

Mike is an integral team member at 5DCE and is a highly skilled problem solver with a unique ability of breaking down complex engineering problems into easily understood fundamentals able to be portrayed across his designs, drawings and to key clientele. His expertise has extended across a wide range of projects within the residential, commercial and industrial sectors to temporary works design and seismic assessments.

Our team culture and environment resonates within Mike as his personable and approachable attitude are always evident in and out of the office. Open communication and knowledge sharing are key attributes within Mike alongside his passion for Engineering and creating innovative and pragmatic cost effective solutions.

You will find Mike spending quality time with his family outside of work, honing his Aikido skills or up the mountains on his bike as lifestyle and balance are important aspects of Mike’s life.

Introducing Paerangi Matunga who joined 5DCE in late 2022 as a structural engineer. Pae graduated from University of Canterbury with his honors degree in Civil Engineering specialising in Structural Engineering and has continued to hone his skills thereafter.

We love having Pae part of the 5DCE team; his positivity and passion for what he does resonates throughout our office and creates an enjoyable working environment

Pae has a passion for travel and the outdoors whilst frequenting the hospitality scene Canterbury has to offer with his wife. A healthy, balanced and active lifestyle is a priority for Pae which is an important part of the 5DCE culture.

Last but by no means certainly not least, meet Liam Strange. Liam joined the team at 5DCE at the start of 2023. He provides a strong technical background and enjoys the challenges of finding innovative and pragmatic solutions to engineering problems. Liam brings a keenness and commitment to all projects and thrives working as part of a team to deliver high quality projects.

Liam’s project experience extends to a diverse range of projects varying greatly in size, cost and complexity. Projects include large sport and entertainment facilities, commercial, industrial, high-end residential buildings, analysis, reports and strengthening of existing buildings.

Liam has a strong focus on ensuring that designs are fit for purpose, within projects budgets and delivering easy to interpret, comprehensive structural documentation built on quality to uphold our reputation and the success of each and every project. He takes the time to understand client’s needs to develop a structural form and scheme which is fully integrated with other project consultants and is underpinned by buildability, simplicity and repeatability.

Outside of work you might see Liam up the Port Hills mountain biking, out fishing or spending time with his young boys.

Our Vision

Our icon represents the two utterly simple shapes: a semi-circle and a dash which not only represent honesty and integrity, but reflect the force that holds our lives together. They never drift apart, nor collide but remain stoic, in place, tied together; able to project their true form.

The dash above also represents the level of quality the Fifth Dimension strives to achieve, operating at the higher plane. The two components to the shape symbolise the coming together of ideas, clients, and knowledge.

You cannot see the fifth dimension; it acts on a higher plane than we do, it is thus unseen like that of engineering. Invisible to the human eye, seamless yet essential.

Matte Army Green and Black represents the strength behind Fifth Dimension and how we have got to where we are today. Green is a colour of growth and symbolises the strength of getting through tough times, the power within and the strength of a sound structural system.

We are passionate about giving back and supporting the community, promoting Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) whilst actively promoting sustainable healthier homes and workplaces through better design.

At Fifth Dimension we are always exploring new technologies and working alongside industry professionals to improve building functions and raise the standard of living and the built environment.
